Color Coded Parking Lines

In an email exchange with Ron Jones (author of several RV related articles and publications - see <http://www.aboutrving.com>), he mentioned being asked at a couple of Walmarts to park his RV "at the white lines, not the yellow lines". I had also heard this mentioned, but didn't know what it was all about. Ron pointed out this Google Maps image that answers the question: <http://g.co/maps/zv7gn>. If you zoom in you can see that all the parking spaces near the store are marked with yellow lines and the ones further away with white lines.

I'm not sure if Walmart had enough justification to do this just because of RV parking, but perhaps the parking of employees and Walmart trucks helped provide the motivation. At any rate, if you are told to park "at the white lines", you'll know what it means.

Lots of retail stores do this. Employees must park far away (white lines),
so the customers can park near (yellow lines). This is enforced espcially
during the holiday season.

I worked at a WalMart this fall.
The White Lines area is used to guide where employees may park at many stores. The one I was at used a slightly different standard. The manager does have discretion.

Since they are at the areas furthest from the store, using this as a guideline for RVers also does make sense.

We just came through York, Nebraska and the Customer Service lady asked us
to park "anywhere in the white lines". It was late when we arrived and the
yellow parking lot lighting made all the lines look yellow so we parked next
to the truckers that were in the lot as well. Morning light confirmed our
guess.

Also, Mountain Home, ID and Laramie, WY are still allowing ON parking. The
Laramie location is a huge lot and very quiet. Mountain Home asks that you
park at the employee end of the lot NOT in front of the Garden Center.

Thanks again Walmart!!!

Greg

I'd never noticed the different color lines. And I have spent a night or two at Walmarts.

Sure enough the lines at the Elyria, OH Walmart were yellow and white. About the closest 80% to the store were yellow.

Parked last night in Ottawa IL and got the dreaded knock on the door about 11PM. Seems the parking lot line painting crew showed up and needed everybody to move to the other end of the lot. I noticed yellow and white lines in the morning. What is the significance? Thanks.

I guess I started this. I went through two experiences (different stores) in the last few weeks where we called for permission and were told to park on the white lines, not the yellow lines. A Google look at some of these Walmarts will show you the distinct difference. It apparently keeps you from parking near their door and interfering with "normal" customer's access.

Frankly, it makes it easier on RVers as you don't have to concern yourself with where to park.

I contacted Bill H. to let him know.

I worked at walmart  the colored lines tell employees where to park so they are away from the customer parking and front door    look to see where most employees park and there is still areas for rvs that are away from most employees too

Jack,
I suspect that had you gone inside the store and asked for permission to spend the night in their parking lot you would have been told where to park, and would not have had to move in the middle of the night.

Gary,
Excuse me but I did go inside and ask for permission to park about 7pm and was told to park along the outer edge of the lot, exactly where I had left the rig! As they painted the whole lot it would not made any difference where I parked, I would have had to move. Me and about 15 other rv's and trucks. I heard an in-store announcement asking customers to move to the newly painted areas when I was outside setting the toad up to move. They finished about 4:45AM If the lot painting was organized like I have seen before they would have blocked off half the lot one night and half the next.
The best approach to this site is to stay away and avoid the unpleasantness. Good luck!
