[walmartrving] Some New Plans for Walmarts

A new member, "Marletta M", in a nice note to me, mentioned she had heard of some new plans that Walmart has for their parking lots. I was not aware of that, so used Google to locate this article:
https://www.inc.com/minda-zetlin/walmart-town-centers-restaurants-fitness-jogging-food-trucks-loveland-colorado.html https://www.inc.com/minda-zetlin/walmart-town-centers-restaurants-fitness-jogging-food-trucks-loveland-colorado.html

This could really impact overnight RV parking if it becomes a trend with Walmart.

Does anyone know how the Bessemer Al Walmart is for onP?

Seems to have plenty of curbside. Looks nice. I see some trucks there in the lot.

If you would just call them and ask if it's allowed you would know exactly
what their policy is. It doesn't get any simpler than that.

I believe.. if you ask and are told nop then you can't park.. if you do it
becomes willful defiance. If you don't ask then you are ok until someone
says otherwise.... so dont ask.

I have a friend that's a walmart manager.. he always tells people nop.. its
a safe position for him even though it's ok to park

Absolutely not..
It is my understanding that walmart has an open door policy allowing
overnight parking, its the local ordinances that prohibit it. I have been
told this many times.. from walmart managers.

It seems like time to review Walmart's only published statement addressing this. It is on their corporate site, under "Frequently Asked Questions":

----------------------------------------------
Can I park my RV at a Walmart store?

While we do not offer electrical service or accommodations typically necessary for RV customers, Walmart values RV travelers and considers them among our best customers. Consequently, we do permit RV parking on our store parking lots as we are able. Permission to park is extended by individual store managers, based on availability of parking space and local laws. Please contact management in each store to ensure accommodations before parking your RV.
-----------------------------------------------

Note that Walmart says:
Store managers individually permit or deny this.
You are requested to contact management first.

I hesitate to point out that the Walmart statement does not even contain the word "overnight", though most assume that it is implied.

Completely agree. RV parks back city council candidates who back restricted parking. Even followed a case where an RV park owners relative won a seat in a Wyoming town and pushed it through. Many times parked at walmarts where ordinance signs were up, managers said fine. ---ben

So last year a big snow storm was coming..I needed a place to hunker
down..early morning I called a local Walmart ..and asked if they allowed
onp..I was told sorry but no.. that evening I needed supplies so I stopped
at that same Walmart. On the way out I talked to the security guard and
mentioned the nop. He said we could park there as long as we wanted there
are always trucks and rv's in the parking lot. I mentioned what I was told
on the phone..he said "how would they know what goes on at night they work
during the day"

here is the website walmart developed for this project. It will in effect element all RV parking for the most part. It appears with seeing other stories about this walmart is trying to increase foot traffic to stores with other outside based areas to attract folks.. things like firepits, green areas etc..

going to be interesting to see how it works out.

agree. it makes no difference what any list or person says
the only way to determine if ONP is permitted is to call the store. and it can change from day to day, manager to manager. back in the day when we were doing the overnight thing at wally we had an occasion where we were allowed to ONP on the outbound trip but denied on the return trip. another time the Flying J on I-40 at Albuquerque had a NO ONP sign in the lot but I went inside and politely asked and was given permission for one night. it's always best
IMO mandatory
to ask permission first. bill does a great job maintaining the list but the list can never be up-to-the-minute accurate simply because changes occur and aren’t discovered until someone reports the change to bill. we always carried a wally directory (and later the app) to locate a store's address and phone number and we always
always
either called ahead or went into the store to ask permission before parking.
